"They
are so in sync!” This
was my oldest son’s comment as he watched a video of an incredible drum line.
His synopsis was absolutely correct. They had surgical precision. They
performed stunt after stunt, which required their awareness of each other’s
steps at every second. While we were watching them, my husband made the comment that they had been performing the same show for years. I guess their repetition
paid off because they were definitely “in sync”. I like that phrase which
basically denotes that the group’s drum playing was synchronized. Synchronized
means “To operate in unison.” My simple version of this definition is
to operate as one. When I think of being in sync I also think of the
synchronized swimmers that compete in the Olympics. They have such precision,
then add the fact that they are underwater performing their stunts makes it
that much more amazing.
Did you know that God desires for us to be in
sync with Him? He
longs for us to be so much in Him that His steps are our steps. His
thoughts are our thoughts. His ways are our ways. Perhaps you are
like me and you want to know “How do I get to the place where I am in
sync with God?” It goes without saying that it requires effort on our
part: Just as the drum line spends a great deal of time (countless hours)
together practicing their routine, learning each other’s rhythm, sensitizing
themselves to their fellow drummer’s every move, so must we do the same with
God. Even with the synchronized swimmers, they spend hours, days, even months
together not only learning their routines, but also learning and perfecting the
way that each swimmer executes the moves. Using both groups as our model, I
believe that to the extent that we put our time in studying His Word, seeking
Him in prayer, and obeying His commands our ability to be in sync with Him
becomes more and more apparent. Oh how I long to be there. But I know
that it will require a sacrifice on my part, way beyond my mere lip service. It
is a call to action! I am ready and willing. It is definitely worth it!
