The social media epidemic has definitely had an impact on
society and depending on who you talk with, that impact has been both positive and
negative. Some believe that being a participant in these networks is an
excellent way to gain status in our status-driven society. One of the things that
people do is use these as measuring sticks of their popularity. The goal is to
have as many friends or followers as possible. The word friend here is used very loosely. Most people have in
excess of 500 friends on Facebook and even that many more followers on Twitter,
Instagram and other types of social networks. I will be the first to say that I
have that many on Facebook, but truth be told that while I know most of these
people I wouldn’t really consider them as true friends.
A friend is defined as one attached to another by
affection or esteem or a favored companion (Merriam-webster.com). I know if I were to look at my “friends list” most would not fit the
criteria and this would be the case for many people. Yet, we put a lot into acquiring “friends” in this manner. Some people really expend a lot of energy
on this. Have you ever thought what would
happen if we would put our efforts into being a
friend of God? To do this we must
understand that it goes far beyond clicking a button and sending a request; but
it will require a sacrifice on our part. We must spend time in the Word, in
prayer, and follow His example. We read in James 2:23
And the scripture was
fulfilled that says, "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as
righteousness," and he was called God's friend. I desire for God to
consider me His friend. I know I can count on Him. I won’t Him to know He can
count on me. Be encouraged today.
