I read a
post from a friend where she mentioned how she had read a verse just last week
and she didn’t understand it, but she continued to read it and when she came
back to that same verse this week she gets it. The fact is that sometimes the
Word may not be clear to us in the beginning or we may not fully “get it” at our initial exposure to it,
but we must continue to seek understanding. It may require a little to a lot of
effort on our part to gain a full understanding, but that should never deter us
from doing whatever is necessary to grow in our knowledge of the Word. Some of
us will put forth great effort to understand games, people, and other things
that might be complex at first, but won’t put that same effort and diligence
into understanding the Word of God.
Some
scriptures have more than a surface meaning, they have a much deeper message
for us to grasp. Because of this it may require us to dive in, use additional
resources, and seek God in prayer in order to get what God is saying. How much are you willing to give to get a
sincere understanding of what God is saying? It goes without saying that
understanding His Word is so much more than a head knowledge , but it is an
understanding that penetrates your very being. It is an understanding that
causes you to change as a result of grasping it.
In order to really gain
understanding of the Word of God we must understand that it is not by one
method, but it comes by:
-
Hearing the Word – We
can gain understanding through hearing the Word preached or taught. The
scripture found in Romans 10:17 tells
us "Consequently, faith comes
from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of
Christ"
-
Studying the Word –
We gain understanding of the Word when we spend time earnestly, diligently
studying it. 2 Timothy 2:15 reads “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a
workman who needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”
- Meditate
on the Word – When
we keep God’s Word on our hearts and minds, it begins to penetrate our heart. Joshua 1:8 reminds us of this “This book of the law shall not depart out of
thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest
observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt
make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”
- Acting
on the Word –
Lastly, understanding comes from putting God’s Word into practice, applying it and
doing what it instructs us to do. The more we use it, the more understanding or
revelation will come. In James 1:22
it reads “But
be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.”
We are
all after something I know, but if understanding and wisdom are not part of
our search then something is wrong? I desire to grow in my understanding thus
I know I have got to get busy hearing, studying, meditating and acting on His
Word. They are an essential part of the growth process. I want to grow in Him, don't you? Be encouraged today.

Wisdom is the principal thing; Therefore
get wisdom.
And in all your getting, get understanding. Exalt her, and
she will promote you;
She will bring you honor, when you embrace her. She
will place on your head an ornament of grace;
A crown of glory she will deliver
to you. Proverbs 4:7-8
