I Love You More

I remember when my youngest son was little. We would have this “game” where one of us would say “I Love You” and then the other one would respond, “I Love You More”, and then we would continue going back and forth saying, “No, I Love you more” until one of us would give in and quit. He was relentless in it. That kid would not give in! Sounds silly I know, but for me as a mom, I meant every word when I said to my son “I Love you More”. Maybe it wasn’t just a game for him, but I really don’t think my son understood then or perhaps not even now, the love that I have for him and the lengths that I would go because of that love. Not that I was competing with him, but I wanted him to know that there is nothing that he could do to cause me to stop loving him. As a parent, our love is unexplainable for our children. No matter what they do or what they say our love reaches beyond that.

If my love is like that for my son, how deep is the love that the Heavenly Father has for me? Do I really comprehend His love for me? Do you? No, the fact is we can’t even wrap our human intelligence around the vastness of His love for us. Our point of reference is the earthly love that we see those around us demonstrate. That love pales in comparison to the love that God has for us. His love was such that while we rejected Him, lied on Him, disobeyed Him, and downright dismissed Him, that love still led him to make the ultimate sacrifice, death. It’s a deep love that is so much more than we can grasp. Sometimes we need to be reminded of His love, probably more often than we are. Life’s journey can get the best of us. We make bad decisions, say the wrong things, and stray away, but His love still remains the same. He loves us more than our mistakes and our mess-ups and offers an opportunity to start again. No matter who you are, where you’ve been or what you’ve done, God says “I love you more.”

~ But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
~ Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13
