“My life is not my
own, to you I belong, I give myself to you.” Those are some powerful words
to a worship song that I kept rehearsing over and over in my head today,
actually all weekend. That song has
been on my heart since Sunday. We sang it during worship. It’s not a new song
and it’s one that I have heard before, but for some reason I just can’t shake it. Those
words continue to echo in my spirit. The song is entitled “I Give Myself Away” by William McDowell. Today as I sang those words I asked myself
the question “What does it really mean to
“give yourself away”? The word surrender
came to me. It is defined as “to yield to the power,
control, or possession of another upon compulsion or demand.
Is that what God really wants from us, a position of
complete and total surrender?
I would have to say yes. In the scriptures we are reminded
that we are not our own (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). When I think of surrender I
picture a person standing, raising a white flag signifying their surrender of
their very being to another person. Perhaps that is the way it is in the
spiritual realm as well. In order to do this, it is like we literally have to
hold up our white flag and surrender our own will, our own way, our own plans
to what He has for us. It is often much easier said than done because our flesh
wants to do its own thing and have it’s own way but it is up to us to make
it surrender (I Corinthians 9:27). I can hear the thoughts now, What about what I want to do? What about my plans? I choose not to
worry about that because I know that what He chooses to do with my life is
infinitely better than what I could do on my own.
There is so much that He desires to do in and through us, if
we would just surrender. My prayer today is that I can surrender my life
unconditionally, wholeheartedly, into His hands. I encourage you as you go
through your day, ponder this thought of surrender. Ask yourself “Have I
truly given myself away to God?” “In
what areas have I not surrendered to Him?” Listen for His reply and then do
what is necessary to do just that, surrender. I included a link to the song I
mentioned previously. I hope it touches your heart as it did mine. It is my
prayer that we, His children would get in and remain in a position of surrender
to the Father. Be encouraged today!
