I
will admit what most of us would not, I am one of those people that will drive
my car until the gaslight comes on, but not only that I will continue to drive
it until the very last minute and then chance making it to the gas station. I
know what you are thinking, that’s not the way it should be and believe me, I KNOW this. But sometimes I get so
busy, running here and there; focused on the places I need to get to, so much
that I forget to even look at the gas hand. It is not until the last minute
that I notice that my indicator light is on. Yes, it comes on in plenty of time
to warn me that I am about to be in “push
my car mode”, but I either ignore it or forget about it
until I am literally at a point where I am running on empty. Thank God I have
never completely run out of gas trying to make it to the gas station, but I
have cut it extremely close, doing what some might refer to it as “running on fumes”. Perhaps you can
identify with this?
Well,
God used this same scenario to show me something about my walk with Him. He showed
me that I was doing the same thing with my spiritual “fuel” as well. I was allowing myself to get to a point where I was
pretty much “running on empty”
because I wasn’t spending time with Him in prayer and studying His Word on a
daily, consistent basis. My indicator light had come on time and time again
(the Holy Spirit) to remind me that I was in a serious danger of being
completely, totally on “E”, yet I was so busy with “things” that I ignored the
warning. I could tell something wasn’t right. I was spiritually drained and
couldn’t figure it out. I got to a point where I was desperate for an answer so
I asked God what was the problem. Quietly He spoke “You are empty, because you have not spent time with Me, studying my
Word and communicating with me”. It was at that point that I realized that
I had to make some changes. I needed to do whatever it took to change my spiritual
fuel gauge reading from “E” to “F”, immediately!
It
really does make perfect sense. Think about it; How can you or I be an effective
witness for Christ if we do not re-fuel daily by studying His Word and spending
time communicating with Him in prayer and Him communicating with us? The answer
is simple, I can’t and neither can you. These are NOT optional items, just like
putting gas in our vehicles isn’t. Heed the warning light, the spiritual gas
gauge is flashing and the time to act is NOW. We all need to get a “fill-up” today and tomorrow and the next
day. Our survival depends on it. Be encouraged today!
