It was one of those days and my frustration level was at an all
time high. I muttered the familiar phrase “I
can’t wait until this day is over!” To me it was just a bad day all around,
nothing good as far as I could see and I just wanted it to end. It wasn’t long
before I walked past two of my colleagues and I overheard a small portion of a
conversation. One of them was venting to the other one about how their day was
going and in response to her he spoke the words “Carpe Diem!” I had heard the phrase before and I knew the jest of the
meaning was simply taking each day as it comes and making the very best you can
out of it. The official definition defines it this way “to enjoy the pleasures of the moment without concern for the future.”
As I thought about this phrase it reminded me of the scripture found in Psalm 118:24 that says “This
is the day the Lord has made; We
will rejoice and be glad in it.” I realized that my approach to my day was
certainly not anything close to “rejoicing”.
I was wishing the day away because I chose to focus on the things that were
going wrong. I didn’t focus on the fact that the day was a gift from God, a blessing to even be
alive. I have to remind myself of this often, that I shouldn’t allow
circumstances, people, issues or anything to overshadow the blessing of a new
day. No matter how bad it may seem or how chaotic things may get I must choose
to rejoice in it. I will do as the phrase Carpe
Diem indicates, seize every opportunity that the day holds to live my life
for Christ and be a witness for Him. How will you approach your day? I hope and pray you too will seize every opportunity to be a witness for Him and rejoice because you have been given this great gift. Be encouraged today!
